WM Senior Director Internal Communications in Houston, Texas

Job Summary

This corporate-level position provides employee and senior executive internal communications counsel, strategic direction, and oversight of the company’s internal communications needs.

The Senior Director, Internal Communications will be expected to establish and actively execute on an integrated, strategic internal communications program that align with business objectives and priorities, as well as generating employee awareness and engagement around those business priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.

  • Develop, lead and execute on internal organizational and employee communication programs to engage employees and heighten their level of business understanding and engagement with the business across the U.S., Canada, and India.

  • Oversee the creation and delivery of all internal content, including digital/online news features, videos and multi-media assets.

  • Lead development of executive communications for the Senior Leadership Team, including all-company announcements, speeches and talking points in support of business and functional objectives. The Senior Director will be a key liaison and partner to senior leaders for internal communications needs.

  • Work in collaboration with field communications leads to drive effective internal communications in support of market area business needs.

  • Manage Waste Management’s internal communications channels, including intranet and mobile app strategy and content.

  • Coordinate large-scale meeting and Town Hall planning, ensuring senior executives are fully prepared and that meeting content/key messages is broadly communicated, as appropriate, to multiple employee groups. Oversee internal meetings audio-visual and webcast logistics.

  • Develop robust metrics and tracking around internal communication efforts.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Direct oversight of approximately 4 exempt level positions.

Education and Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Candidate must possess a minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in communications-related positions for public companies

  • Experience forging solid relationships at multiple levels of an organization and across cultures (10 years)

  • In-depth knowledge and experience developing strong, clear and measurable internal communications strategies, goals and plans that are aligned with those of the business (10 years)

  • Experience working with managing agencies, consultants and budgets (10 years)

  • Experience writing executive speeches and developing presentations (10 years)

  • Experience building, developing and managing effective, motivated and successful teams (10 years)

Experience Preferred

  • Related experience working directly in a large corporation, or in an agency environment providing support and counsel to a large corporation.

Other Knowledge, Skills or Abilities

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and to translate strategy into action – especially with internal audiences

  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, but also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently and with minimal supervision

  • Strong leadership competencies, specifically in terms of influence management, effectively gaining consensus for new approaches, managing through ambiguity, ability and willingness to challenge the status quo, and effectively handling multiple stakeholders. Strong team-building skills

  • Working knowledge of social media and other new media technologies

  • Ability to prioritize requests and leverage communications resources in a matrixed environment for business requests
